Food insecurity is a major world problem. Globally, 1 in 10 people does not have enough to eat and this number is growing. In addition, approximately 1/3 of food on the planet is lost or wasted each year (according to Feeding America, in the US we waste 40% of the food we purchase).
Making a Difference
One of our natural stone suppliers, Maqstone, has launched the I’m Not Just a Stone campaign in an effort to help address food insecurity. Maqstone is based in Brazil and their quarries produce marble, soapstone and quartzite. Brazil is the second largest food producer in the world, yet 53 million people in Brazil alone struggle with food insecurity. This fact inspired Maqstone to act.
To Maqstone, each stone slab sold is a step toward reducing world hunger. For every slab of Maqstone that is purchased worldwide, up to 22 pounds of food is donated to organizations that work to get food to those who need it.
Responsible choices
We all strive to make responsible choices in our daily life and as consumers want to purchase from companies that have responsible business practices. Maqstone offers beautiful natural stones for your home – including kitchen countertops, vanity tops, bar tops and fireplace surrounds –where you will know that choosing this stone is reducing global food insecurity.
We are always happy to see how the manufacturers we work with choose to make a difference in the world, from planting trees to finding innovative ways to recycle water and natural materials. So, we’re very pleased to spread the word about Maqstone’s efforts to combat world hunger.
As with all of our beautiful inventory, the stones are much more beautiful in person, so we invite you to visit one of our showrooms in Haverhill, MA or West Bridgewater, MA to view Maqstone. Look for the “I’m Not Just a Slab” sticker as you browse our large inventory of stones.
We look forward to seeing you.
