Throughout the second half of the 20th century, Brazil’s natural stone industry grew in size, talent and innovation. Today, Brazil’s best-known exports are marble, quartzite and granite, and Boston Granite Exchange imports them to offer their beauty to you.
Beautiful, Diverse Stones
Brazil is the fifth-largest country in the world, and it is very geographically diverse. The variations in climate, natural resources and geological movement over time have created different types of beautiful natural stones all over the country. Different regions are known for specific types of natural stone, and Brazilian stone is considered to be among the finest in the world.
The northeast section of the country is where the beautiful Brazilian quartzite is mined. The middle of the country, around the state of Minas Gerais, is known for granite; this is the region that was originally mined for gold and copper, and sometimes the granite from the region bears flecks or small veins of these metals. The heart of the country, near Tesouro, is the region best known for fine marble. It is there that the mining industry began in Brazil many decades ago with the stone factories locating themselves near the marble quarries.
Building International Partnerships
Boston Granite Exchange has developed strong partnerships in Brazil which allow us to source the finest quality natural stones from the region, including exotic stones.
We regularly travel to the regions from which we import stone, enjoying the opportunity to tour the quarries and see the stones first hand. During these trips, we meet wonderful people with local connections and in-depth knowledge about each quarry and the stones being mined.
In Brazil, our go-to guy is Fernando Lunau, and his family’s company, Stonexpo. Our relationship with Fernando and his boots on the ground were critical to us during the pandemic, when we were unable to travel outside of the US.
Fernando has been working directly with Boston Granite Exchange for over a decade. The depth of his knowledge about natural stones is impressive. His expertise on the quality and properties of the different quarries and their stones is invaluable to us as we choose natural stones to import.
Fernando identifies beautiful natural stones from the many quarries around Brazil, recommends stones and ensures that what we bring to our showroom is of the very best quality. His local knowledge and network allow him to alert us when there are new colors coming from established quarries or new quarries opening.
Relationships, like the one we have with Fernando, are how we have built Boston Granite Exchange so that we can identify and source beautiful stones from around the world.
