Quartz is a beautiful option for kitchen countertops, vanity tops, fireplace surrounds and more. But, homeowners are sometime unclear as to what quartz is and where it comes from.
Natural stone is mined from quarries in huge blocks and then cut into slabs. We all remember learning about rocks and minerals in science class and quartz is a mineral – in fact, the second most abundant mineral on earth. But quartz is not removed from the earth in large blocks ready to cut into slabs.

Quartz slabs, like those in The BGE Quartz Collection, are considered engineered stone. A typical slab contains over 90 percent quartz which has been ground and mixed with resins, polymers and pigments. This is formed into slabs which are then cut and polished, ready to be fabricated for kitchen countertops, vanity tops, and/or fireplace surrounds. Whether the quartz is finely or coarsely ground and how much pigment is used determines the final look of the slab. Quartz often mimics the look of natural stones, including granite or marble.
Quartz has many excellent qualities that make it a great choice for kitchen countertops.
